Tarot Sreads |
To do a reading, have the Questioner shuffle the cards
(be sure to ask them not to turn the cards around as they shuffle unless you like reversed meanings).
While they are shuffling, they should think of their question.
Whether they tell you the question or not is up to you to decide together.
Lay the cards out in the chosen spread (see below).
Then, interpret the cards, being sure to take note of the relationships between the cards. |
 |
 |
The 3 Card Spread.
The 3 card spread is one of the easiest and quickest to do.
Card 1 represents influences from the past
Card 2 represents influences from the present
Card 3 represents influences for the future. |
 |
The Cross Spread.
This spread is a little more complicated, but does give more detail.
Position 1 : The past and influences
Position 2 : Obstacles in your path
Position 3 : Favourable influences
Position 4 : The near future
Position 5 : The distant future
Position 6 : The eventual outcome in life. |

The Celtic Cross Spread.
The Celtic Cross is the most common spread used in divination.
The bottom of the cross is usually placed along the side for convenience. |
The Meanings of Each Position:
1) The Basis of the Situation is the first card, placed in the center of the circular section of the cross. This identifies the problem and sets the tone for the rest of the reading.
2) What Crosses the Situation is the card placed across this first card. This card represents the challenges faced by the questioner, or the influences that should be taken into account.
3) The Questioner's Subconscious is placed beneath the first card.
This card will provide insight into forces that the Questioner may not be aware of that are influencing the way the Questioner responds to a situation.
4) The Past is seen in the card placed to the right of the spread. In particular, this card should be read as learned lessons or unresolved situations that are influencing the present.
5) The Questioner's Conscious can reveal their goals and wishes. Special attention should be paid to any conflicts between the Conscious and the Subconscious of the Questioner.
6) The Future represents the direction that the Questioner is going if they continue to act in the manner suggested by the previous cards.
7) The Questioner provides a snapshot of the Questioner's personality at the time the reading is done. It is the first card in the row of four cards to the left. These cards are interpreted as the events themselves. Whereas the circular part of the cross represents an inward gaze, the leg of the cross is the outward face of the Questioner.
8) Environmental Influences include the Questioner's childhood, their school or workplace, and the way that they are perceived by others.
9) The Hopes and Fears of the Questioner are revealed here. Depending on the card, you may wish to interpret it as either one or the other. But Hopes and Fears are often a flip side of one another, because the things that we most hope for can be the source of our greatest anxiety.
10) The Outcome of the situation is found in the final card. Outcome differs from Future because it reveals what will happen rather than where the Questioner is headed. |
