Plants have been the primary source of medicine for people of every culture. Healing plants are mentioned in the Bible and in other historical literature. Plants that were used as medicines were referred to as 'herbs' over 4000 years ago by European and Mediterranean cultures.

Although the term 'herb' once applied only to non-woody plants, today 'herb' refers to any plant having nutritional or medicinal values. Additionally an 'herb' may be a fruit, a bark, a flower, a leaf, a root and any non-woody plant.

Herbs are considered best when they are grown in the wild, untouched by industrial pollutants. Some prefer to harvest herbs that are cultivated indoors, in a controlled environment. Some herbalists recommend gathering certain herbs with the seasons and time of day to achieve the highest standard of quality. And still others will ignore this practice, and will plant herbs out of season so that they are available all year round.

Many believe that the energy with which the herbs are gathered is very important and should be done with great spiritual awareness and great respect. Whatever choices you make, remember that you must be comfortable with them, so choose what is best for you.
